Is this headline correct? I think its use of ‘on to’ is incorrect, but I could be wrong. Should it not be onto? And yes, this was taken at my new hangout place – Vida in Willowbridge…

I think “onto” would be correct because the meaning of the headline seems to be that of holding the position of the political seat. I think the headline is wordy and the meaning just as clear if it read “Hard to hold the hottest seat in the Cape.” But the copy editor designing the page probably had instructions to write a three-deck headline using a certain font style and size. In the rush to deadline it wasn’t caught, or didn’t look wrong. (Not that meeting deadline or avoiding makeover costs should be an excuse. Still, it happens.

Oh, and insert “would be” between “just as” in the second sentence, and a “)” at the end of paragraph. Apparently I lapsed into a comma in the rush to post the comment, and didn’t proof it.

Hey Tod
After many attempts, I realise it’s not possible to edit comments.
Sorry. But your explanation was fine; I understood it right away!

Good catch on this. I, too, think it should be “onto.”
Like the blog! I’ll be back.
Glad you found GrammarGuard.org.

Hey Christina
I love your blog; it’s so snarky. I shouldn’t say this, but I spent far too much time reading it at work.
Thanks for the compliment, lady.

Either is right, although the tendency is towards “on to” as opposed to “onto”.
“She jumped ‘onto’ the train” versus “she held ‘on to’ the rope”.
